Some courses are open to non-graduates who may find one or more of the courses helpful in achieving their professional or personal goals.

Introduction to pre-license programs and RN to BSN Transfer Programs

For the main detailed admission criteria, go tohttp://www.calstatela.edu/admissions/major-specific-criteria

Basic pre-license BSN option

The pre-license BSN option is for students who do not have an RN license. An incoming freshman may be admitted as undeclared with an interest in nursing through the admissions process if he or she designates nursing as an intended major in the Cal State application and meets the eligibility requirements. The admission requirement as an unregistered person with nursing interests for first-year students is a 3.0 GPA in high school and a SAT score of 900 in the math and verbal portions of the exam. Students who are admitted as unregistered with nursing interests must meet the program's prerequisites for admission to the program and be admitted to the program within 45 eligible 30-degree units or must choose an alternative specialization. Students who choose an alternative major after 45-30 units may still apply for the Nursing major. Continuing or transferring students must have at least a 2.75 GPA to be admitted as an undeclared person with an interest in nursing. To be admitted to the Pre-License BSN option, students must meet additional admission criteria, including all Nursing admission prerequisites as outlined on the School's website, prior to applying for the course.

RN to BSN transfer program option

The RN to BSN transfer option is for students holding a California R.N. License and Associate of Arts or Associate of Science in Nursing or NLNAC accredited degree. To be admitted to the RN to BSN option, students must meet additional admission criteria, including all Nursing admission prerequisites set out below (and found on the School's website) prior to admission to that major. Admission to the RN to BSN Program also requires a separate application with a copy of the CA RN license attached. The minimum GPA accepted by all transfer institutions is 2.75.

Prerequisites required (28 units)

The following courses are a prerequisite for admission to all Bachelor of Nursing programs:

General information

Nursing program students must have university liability insurance, personal health insurance, and workers' compensation if required by the clinical agency. Nursing students must have a valid California driver's license and access to a car covered by appropriate auto insurance. Before entering the first clinical lab, students must have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation card, physical examination, proof of immunity to rubella and hepatitis B and other specified infectious diseases, a two-stage Mantoux skin test, and a chest X-ray if evidence of a positive skin test for tuberculosis.

Additional vaccinations may be required if required by clinical agencies. An annual renewal of the CPR certificate, an annual physical examination and a two-stage Mantoux skin test or chest X-ray if indicated will be required. Information on the rules of professional conduct, clinical attire and photo identification rules can be found in the student handbook. All nursing students are required to complete a background check upon admission to the program.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully assess their personal criminal history before applying to the School of Nursing. Nursing students must have a clear background check that is accepted by clinical agencies upon admission to the School of Nursing. Because the California State Board of Nursing makes the final decision on eligibility for licensing, a passing background check can be a barrier to licensing, certification, and employment.

School regulations

Nursing students must maintain a good academic record and obtain C grades or better in all nursing majors and in all natural science and social science majors that are prerequisites or additional to the major. Nursing courses and science subjects for which the student received a grade lower than C may be repeated only once, and only with the consent of the teacher. Students who obtain a C- or lower for the second time in the same course or obtain a C- or lower in three separate courses will not be allowed to continue in the BSN program. To meet the continuing satisfactory performance requirement, probationary students may not enroll in a nursing course until the probationary period is lifted.

Students may not enroll in any course that requires other nursing entry requirements unless the entry courses are completed with a grade of C or better.

Primary Nursing students must complete at least two Diagnostic Readiness Tests for the R.N. Exam. Licensing exam (NCLEX) at your own expense, one before NURS 4860/NURS 4870 and one while registering with NURS 4860/NURS 4870.
