introduction
Getting lip fillers can be an amazing experience that improves your looks and boosts your self-esteem. It can create better facial balance and overall harmony, and even shave years off a person's overall appearance.
On the other hand, it can also be a nightmare that makes you curse yourself and wish you had never done anything. You may pray that you'll never have an unsafe thought about your lips or face again if they just go back to how they were before.
Or the experience could be both! You could love them, then hate them, and then love them again. It can seriously be a rollercoaster of emotions.
This article will talk about this roller coaster and what to expect when you get injected. It talks about how to deal with the ups and downs and how to be sure that everything will be fine.It also talks about when to be concerned and when to seek intervention or a second opinion.
The normal experience after lip filler
Finding the right injector:
Here are some tips and things to ask BEFORE getting lip fillers. If you already have someone great or have already received the injections, feel free to skip this section. Or if you've had lip fillers and aren't happy, think about those things too.

- Is this license a medical license? i.e. Registered Nurse (RN), Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Medical Doctor (MD)
- How much experience does the injector have?
- Does their website or business look legitimate?
- Do you have before and after photos?
- Do they have good reviews?
- What kind of vibes do you get after meeting her?

On the day of your appointment, you will likely be excited and nervous at the same time. You should get some pre-treatment instructions from your injector so you know how to prepare and what medications to avoid before your appointment. Here are some general tips for preparing for your appointment.
- Try toIf possible, plan a few days off after your injections. A Friday is a good time to get your lips ready so you have the weekend to deal with the worst of the puffiness.
- Plan not to be with anyone for the first 24-48 hours, maybe even family and friends. SoGet your grocery shopping and meals planned if you don't want to leave the house.
- If you live with someoneTalk to them about your procedure and that you will be swollenbut that they perish. If they also know what to expect, they won't freak you out when they say something like "OMG your lips are huge." This comes from my own experience (see video below) 😉 .
- Have small ice packs readycleaned with rubbing alcohol (ice helps with swelling, cleaning helps prevent infection).
- Consider going to the health food store in time to get itBromelain(a supplement that helps with swelling) andArnica(a supplement that helps with bruising) if approved by your injector.
- Prepare for pain, even with anesthetics you will still feel it sometimes, and it's better to be overprepared than underprepared.
- Try torelax, if you go to a talented and qualified injector, he will make you as comfortable as possible and you will get a great result.
The night after your injections
After leaving the office, you may feel a little insecure as your lips continue to swell.
I always show people my lips right after the injection before they swell insanely and tell them thatYou will return to this level or below. Often I also take a picture to give to them. This helps immensely when swelling really sets in and it isHe'll probably freak out about 6-12 hours later.
Knowing how to get in touch with your injectoralso if you are worried or think you might need some reassurance. All my patients have my email address and cell phone number in case they have any concerns. Most of the time they are well prepared and feeling fine when the swelling sets in.
Some tips for the first night after the injection:
- Ice cream every now and thenTry 5 minutes on and 10 minutes off as much as possible
- Take bromelain and arnicaApply to the lips according to the instructions and also an arnica ointment
- Avoid salty foods and alcoholas they can increase swelling
- Refer to your aftercare instructions formedications to avoid, such as aspirin and ibuprofenthis could increase bruising (unless otherwise approved)
- know thatYou'll get a little sore after the anesthetic wears offand that's normal
- Some areas or hardness, lumps and bumps are normalfrom swelling and bruising, as well as the product itself (it will be softer)
- Areas of numbness are normalfrom the anesthetics in the product and from swelling
- Sleep on your backand increased if possible to prevent worsening of the swelling
- Remember not to love them or hate them until 14 days when the product is settled.

Day 1, the morning after the injections
The swelling is usually worst in the morning, especially if you don't sleep on your back. No panic. It will decrease more and more as the day progresses. The first 24-48 hours are almost always the worst. Try glaze first thing in the morning and take your bromelain and arnica again.
Your lipsWILLEGo downstairs and if you do it well they look amazing and natural. AlsoIf you love them swollen, this may be an indication that you may want more bulking 2-4 weeks later when they have fully settled down.
Tag 2
Day 2, expecting to still be prettyswollen and bruising may become more prominent.Bruises can also migrateaway from the lips and up to the nose or down to the chin. This is normal, it's just the blood working its way out. Pain is normal too.
Tag 3
The swelling should have gone down a bit since day 1 but is still noticeable. If you get your lips done on a Friday and return to work on the third day, it may or may not be noticeable.Note that younger patients may also experience more swelling or more dramatic changes. This is likely due to tighter, supple skin that doesn't wrinkle or stretch as much. So even 1 injection can give Kylie Jenner lips in the first 1-3 days. But it will go down.
Bruises will definitely still be there, but may fade a little if they're just on the lips and may look worse if they've spread beyond the lips.
When applying makeup, look for a good concealer and wear lipstick if you want until day 3 to cover things up if you want.
Watch this video to see how to cover bruises after filling.
Tag 4-7
Things are really coming down and you should feel a little more confident that you look normal and don't have to live with huge swollen lips. They willfeel firm and may appear slightly unevenif you have bruises, but you should be able to see their potential at this point.
Tag 7-13
You should searchmostly normalat this stage and enjoy your new lips. You may want to start trying new lipsticks and you may find that you take more photos than usual. You may still feel a little tight as the filler is still integrating into your normal tissue.
2-4 weeks later
This counts as the bottom line.So you can love them or hate them at this point. This is the period where you can make any touch ups if needed or if you got a bad result somewhere you can also have them resolved.
It is usually not recommended to dissolve lip fillers before 14 days as the final result is not yet visible.
When to get more lip fillers
The longevity of lip fillers is different for everyone and can depend on many factors, such as:
- Alter
- skin elasticity
- metabolism
- Genetic
- type of filler
- capacity
- Technology
As a rule, if they still look good, you should stop buying them. You don't want to look over-plumped or look like you've obviously had lip fillers on. A good injector can even tell you no if you come early or want more filler than you can pull off.
My rule of thumb is that if you want big lips, you have to look like you were born with them, so they still look natural even if you were born with small lips.I inject only 1ml or 1 syringeat once and then build them up once a month until you get the result that looks best.
On average, lip filler lasts 6-14 months for most people. But there are always exceptions to this.
When to worry or when to dissolve lip fillers
Most people are delighted with their pen, but unfortunately poor results can occur and that is usually the result of the technique. Look at the first paragraph or refer toWhat you should look out for in a medical spato find an injector if needed, or to find a new injector if your filler needs to be dissolved and redone.
Some reasons you might want to dissolve your filler include, among others:
- be crowded
- Poor form or aesthetic result
- An uneven result (although a good injector may know how to fix this)
- Filler migration (usually above the vermilion border, the white above the pink of the lips)
- Overall unsatisfied with the result
When to worry:
If you have any worrisome signs at any point during the process, contact your injector immediately or go to the emergency room if you have a severe reaction.
Some warning signs may include, but are not limited to:
- Signs of an allergic reaction: immense swelling, itching, hives, swollen tongue, scratchy throat; Difficulty breathing (this is an emergency call).
- Signs of infection: Warm, red patches or discharge from your lips; Fever, chills or impaired consciousness (call emergency services)
- White or purple areas that seem like they're not getting any blood flow (this may be a blockage in a vessel and you need to get your injector or another injector who can treat this right away, the emergency room probably won't know how to treat this)
- Pain disproportionate to the procedure, also worry about occlusion and contact your injector immediately
Generally,Trust your instincts and react when you feel something is really wrong. Also be aware that while you are swollen you may feel a little panic, so also try to determine if you are simply scared or if there is a real problem.
It's always a good idea to get in touch with your injector if you have any concerns and they should be able to tell you when it's okay to wait at home, if you need to go to them right away, or if you do need more advanced interventions.
Aside from the scary things mentioned, what you're going through is probably normal. Everyone feels the ups and downs after injections and I even went through it myself when I first tried lip fillers. Video follows 🙂 .
